Have you ever noticed aftershave has a bit of ‘bite’ or slight sting to it? That’s due to the alcohol content of a store-bought aftershaves- and no, it doesn’t mean it’s “working” (ever been told that before? 🤣)

It means the liquid base is nearly all alcohol.

And if you like the sting or not- what that sting is doing is disrupting the skin's natural barrier, stripping away essential oils, leading to dryness, irritation, redness, and inflammation, particularly for people with sensitive skin!

It can also exacerbate existing skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis by further irritating the skin.

So this is why I prefer infusing witch hazel extract with skin-healing herbs to take the traditional aftershave to the next level of true healing.

Yes, even home-brewed witch hazel extract does have some alcohol in it (this is what preserves it without preservative) but it’s CONSIDERABLY lower than aftershave, and even lower in alcohol, considerably, than store-bought witch hazel! 

This combination has a wonderful sweet and musky scent with uplifting underlying tones of orange.

Witch hazel is astringent and antiseptic, making it especially nice for those with oily or acne-prone skin, while the elderflower soothes and protects the face.

These gentle aftershaves would be great for women, as well, for things like razor burn!
